GDP Deflator Calculator
The GDP deflator measures the price level of all domestically produced goods and services: deflator = (nominal GDP / real GDP) x 100. Enter nominal and real GDP — for example, 110 and 100 give a deflator of 110, meaning prices are 10% above the base year. You can also solve for real GDP from nominal GDP and the deflator.
GDP Deflator Calculator
Deflator = (nominal GDP ÷ real GDP) × 100
- Divide: nominal ÷ real = 110.00 ÷ 100.00 = 1.1000
- Scale: × 100 = 110.00
- Interpretation: Prices have risen about 10.00% since the base year (nominal GDP exceeds real GDP).
The deflator strips price changes out of nominal GDP, leaving only the change in real output. A deflator of 110 means the overall price level is 10% above the base-year level. It covers all goods and services produced, unlike the CPI basket.
How to use it
Enter nominal GDP and real GDP (same currency units).
Read the GDP deflator (base year = 100).
Optionally solve for real GDP given nominal GDP and the deflator.
What you will learn
- Compute the GDP deflator from nominal and real GDP.
- Convert between nominal and real GDP.
- Explain how the deflator differs from the CPI.
